Trade show touts sustainability
SPARTA — The Sparta Green Team and Sustainable Jersey partnered in sponsoring the “Northern New Jersey Sustainable Resources and Networking Forum” at Sparta Middle School on Tuesday.
The event served as a sustainability trade show of sorts, enabling nearly 200 attendees from throughout the region to network and share information on a variety of green energy and sustainable building practices.
Welcoming remarks were given by Sparta Mayor Gil Gibbs and by Donna Drewes, co-director of Sustainable Jersey. Success stories were shared by members of the Chatham Borough and Mount Arlington Green Teams, and information also was provided on government incentives aimed at encouraging municipalities, businesses and schools to “go green.”
Other participants included the U.S. Green Building Council, Donnelly Energy, the Association of Environmental Commissions of New Jersey, GreenFaith, TransOptions, the Land Conservancy of New Jersey, the New Jersey Audubon Society, the state Board of Public Utilities and Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Sparta Green Team member Mitch Morrison, who helped organize the event, said one of its main purposes was to begin a process of redefining what the terms “green” and “sustainable” really mean.
“The new ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ programs are capitalistic, patriotic, pro- American and pro-growth,” he said.
